The following pages describe how self-employed women in El Alto take care of their children while they work. Reconciling work and family life is a constant challenge that translates into the deployment of different strategies that adapt to the age of the children and to their diverse and changing branches of activity. The aim is to identify these modalities, their advantages and limitations, in order to establish guidelines for institutional action aimed at ensuring that care, an essential task for the sustainability of life, is a shared responsibility of the family and society. The text is organized in two parts. The first part presents the approach and methodological treatment, as well as the results achieved. The second part is intended to present the challenges and possible routes for institutional action.
