According to the conclusions of the Third National Meeting of Rural, Indigenous and Peasant Women held in 2007, there were 54.9 million women living in Mexico and 12.4 million of them lived in rural areas, equivalent to 22.6 percent of the total number of women in the country. It also states that rural localities in Mexico were inhabited by more women than men (the masculinity index was 0.98). The population of women in rural areas who were economically active amounted to 2.4 million, representing 19.4 percent of the labor force in that territorial space
