This is the result of the institutional effort and commitment of UN Women Mexico and a group of national and international academics. Their contributions shed light on some of the epistemological and conceptual challenges and political implications associated with the use of one definition of care over another. It underscores how unpaid care work is deeply ingrained in the production and reproduction of the sex/gender system, the barriers to women's autonomy, and the importance of addressing this issue from a rights-based perspective. This approach is far removed from philanthropy and benevolence and much closer to the principles of citizenship and democracy.
