In the Sustainable Development Goals, Target 5.4 calls for the recognition, reduction and redistribution of unpaid family care work, i.e. the domestic and care work done on a daily basis in the homes, mostly by mothers. It is a somewhat neglected target, and therefore the focus of our 2022 HLPF written statement.

The statement draws attention to the fact that this particular target has not yet received the attention and traction it deserves. It also highlights the weaknesses of this target, which should be stronger if government are serious about addressing the inequities linked to unpaid care work.
